David's Blips

Niagara Falls

Back in Aberdeen there were days when I'd really struggle to even find a photo to put on Blip. This trip, and today especially, there are no shortage of photos I could choose.

We were up at Niagara Falls today seeing one of the Wonders of the World. We started the day by being slightly fleeced into buying tickets for a tour of the area that we were given a few false promises over. The tour was good, but we could have done a lot more for a lot less.

But you can't let a bad decision ruin what turned out to be a fantastic day.

There were plenty of places at Niagara Falls that I'd have loved to have photographed, but given that we were told to wear ponchos at these points, taking a photo would have been camera suicide. Especially on a part of the tour entitled "The Hurricane Deck" where you were more or less standing in Niagara Falls.

We did the Maid of the Mist boat trip at the bottom of the falls which was amazing, and some of the photos to go with it are stunning.

The day was rounded off in the evening with a spectacular sunset and an out of this world fireworks display, which I chose to be my photo of the day.

Interesting fact that my dad told me years ago, but was confirmed by our tour guide today... they switch Niagara Falls off at night to generate hydro electric power. During the day the electricity company steal about 25% of the falls water but at night, when there are no tourists about, this changes to 100%

Our driving probably begins tomorrow with a 300 mile drive to our first camping spot for a night and then onto Chicago after that.
