What Lies Beyond
We took a proper, albeit short tour of Liverpool today and the dockside was one of our stops. This is really a beautiful city...far more aesthetic than I would ever have imagined.
Liverpool has a long and very important history as a port city. It was at one time one of the leading shipping centers in Europe and perhaps the whole world. Not only did émigrés leave these shores for the United States, but Liverpool was also a huge factor in the Triangle Trade that took African slaves to the Caribbean and America.
I chose this photo because I feel that it somewhat represents what the immigrants and captives must have felt - a future that is not quite clear; an uncertainty that was only to be revealed with the crossing of the Atlantic.
