Flamingo USA

The never-say-die attitude of the American collective psyche was demonstrated today in the World Cup, when Jason Donovan slotted home the last-minute winner against Algeria to take the USA to the top of Group C.

I suffered England's turgid 1-0 victory against Slovenia. The football wasn't pretty but the result is what matters most. England now go through to the second stage of the competition and national disgrace has been avoided.

With England finishing second in the group behind the USA, they now face their old adversary Germany on Sunday. Normally, even as an Englishman, I would bank on a German victory but this German team is a pale shadow of the teams that have dominated World Cups in the past. I think England will be fired up for it and, barring any monumnetal cock-ups, for which the English are renowned, England should take their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

I spotted this flamingo adorned in an Uncle Sam outfit in someone's front yard and it seemed to embody this great day for the USA on the international footballing stage.

Go USA! Go England!
