Goal?

Today's World Cup matches were marked by two egregious refereeing decisions.

This morning, Frank Lampard's thunderbolt for England was clearly a yard over the goal line after it had bounced down off the crossbar. Given the technology that has been available for some years, it puzzles me why FIFA remains locked in the 20th Century.

This afternoon, Carlos Tevez's opening goal for Argentina against Mexico was clearly offside and yet it stood. Once again an injustice was seen to be done.

Both decisions probably would not have affected the eventual outcome of the games. Germany tore England to pieces in the second half and were worthy 4-1 winners.

Equally, Argentina were too polished for Mexico and Tevez's second goal will more than likely be the goal of the tournament.

I think it erks fans and players to see an instant replay that clearly shows the officials at fault. It is time to give a fourth official to view video replays and overrule the official on the field if it turns out he made the wrong decision.

Little did I think that just 24 hours later, England would be joining the USA out of the competition.
