SUNLIGHT AND SHADOW ON AN ANCIENT DOOR
For a change, this old door does not belong to the priest, Don Felice. This one belongs to a jolly chap called Luigi. Don Felice does own the other half of this same building and his door is equally weather beaten.
I think the metal rod and wire arrangement is to keep the door from swinging open during wind storms. The door is not locked. Luigi stores the nets for the olive harvest in the shed along with various other bits and pieces. Luckily, both the priest and Luigi are not ones to throw money about so the doors remain as they were built two centuries ago. It's a tribute to the durability of wood in general and chestnut in particular. Luigi has thrown some concrete around the stones at the top of the door but clearly, he is not a stone mason. I hadn't noticed the cement until I saw this photograph.
We buy canes to prop up our tomatoes from Luigi and he gives us home made grappa that will knock your socks off. It is good for preserving grapes. He does not make his grappa in this shed but rather down in the village where he lives.
It's a hot, muggy and thundery day. This is a slightly early blip because I have many a mile to go and a deadline to meet.
