Old Road

In Town they are digging the Market Place up, again! This time to lay a new Watermain. ( Why they didn't do it when the major construction was in progress, is anyone guess!!) Anyway, while crunching out the sub soil they discovered this old road, dates from the 1550s, and is in remarkably good repair, wonder what our roads of today will look like in 500 years! They have decided to leave it in situ and push the new pipe underneath it, so nothing will be damaged. The road is of strips of Cobble stones with upright stones like curbs, You can see better at the top of the photo. I find such things fascinating!! The white line on the photo is the Measuring Tape, gives you an idea how wide the road was.In the right hand corner they found the bones of an animal, dog or cat,(they are being examined to decide what animal and they can also determine approximately when they died). buried next to the roadside. Amazing!
