The pair of Small Red-eyed Damselflies were minding their own business, getting on with mating - admittedly in a rather public place, a lilypad in the middle of the pool. They were harassed and constantly interrupted by lots of other male damselflies.
I'm not sure why damselflies do this - is it jealousy, curiosity or just a desire to see other damsels away?
The interloper here is a Red-eyed Damselfly, a slightly bigger cousin. I say slightly bigger - he's about 35mm long, compared to the Smalls' 29mm. Still tiny! and I forget just how small when I'm constantly looking down a lens at them.
In case you aren't sure, the male Small Red-eyed is the one at the front. He holds the female behind her head and she brings her tail round to meet his back end. Then fertilisation takes place and she'll go on to lay her eggs in the water.
