Laundrette or Art gallery?

It was laundry day for me today. I have been in New York for over a week and I have not had the chance to do any washing. Given the heat and the daily change of clothing, I was running out of clothes to wear. So, I took myself to the basement which houses the laundry and garbage facilities.

I imagined the basement to be quite a dark and shabby place but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was almost the kind of place where one could while away some time. It had a number of fabulous paintings on the walls, and even a library. Apparently, the super (superintendent) brings in things others have discarded to beautify the basement and make it a place of interest for its residents.
