Off-shore fishing
Part 2 in my newly found traditional fishing series. Two days ago I mentioned the busy fishing harbours, out of which for centuries hundreds of colourful wooden canoe-like boats have sailed out to the big and dangerous ocean every morning to catch the day's food and income.
Today's one shows another wide-spread method, which can be found along the entire coast of Ghana: fishing from the beach. I am not sure if this type of fishing is done by people who cannot afford a boat, or if they aim for different fish species, closer to shore. Anyhow, just as with the guys on the boats, it occupies at least some ten men for a full morning to retrieve the fishing net. I am sure that the strong undertow (not to mention the fish in the net) makes this a heavy job, which probably also explains the perfect bodies of all these men, without a gram of fat on them. I experienced the undertow myself, which can get pretty dangerous actually, if you come unprepared. But, the fish on your plate doesn't come any fresher than this!
Edit 21u30: Ghana is in a state of depression now, after victory was stolen from them. I must admit I was way more nervous for Ghana tonight than I was for my own country this afternoon. No Ghana - Netherlands next Tuesday.
Bugger. Going to have a drink now.
