Water critters

My children found these in still water in the garden wheelbarrow. They swim backwards, love to stick the ends of their tails up to touch the water surface, but scatter downwards if the water is disturbed. Their pincers are constantly chomping and they are 10-12mm long.
Any clues? My son thinks dragon flies...
