Bridge abutments at Chesters Roman site
On the east of the River North Tyne at Chollerford, just half a mile from my home, you can see the remains of the bridge abutments from a Roman Bridge, originally built to take a stretch of Hadrian's Wall across the river. This photo shows the massive stones which were quarried and then put in place using a lewis. For those how are interested see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesters_Bridge
It was nearly sunset when I arrived this evening and the river was calm and the site peaceful. A young courting couple were sitting by the riverside, a bit surprised to see a camera woman appearing behind them!
