Lamp post

I've often stared at this venerable lamp-post which is at the bus stop outside Jenners. On a previous occasion waiting at the same spot, I blipped the building opposite. But this time I started wondering what these strange turret like appurtenances either side of it were for - simply decorative, or did they once contain or support something? Do they date from when the lighting was by gas?

And it's certainly the first time that I noticed the little line of text neatly stuck to it - You can learn from everyone and everything.

After this a no 16 bus finally arrived and carried us away from the hell that is Princes Street on a sunny Saturday.
