Lots of dough

Believe it or not, £12 for the loaf advertised here actually represents something of a bargain.

For if you order it on the internet and have it delivered to your door, it will set you back £21.

The Shepherd's Loaf has been described as Britain's most expensive bread and is the creation of Tom Herbert, who runs four Hobbs House Bakery shops in Gloucestershire.

The bakery pictured is in Nailsworth, near Stroud, where we were enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll around.

So what makes the Shepherd's Load so special? Well, it is made from organic Somerset spelt flour, Cotswolds spring water, Cornish sea salt and is raised by a secret 55-year-old sourdough recipe.

According to a report in the esteemed publication for which I work, Tom admits the loaf might seem "horrifically overpriced", but he insists that people will "taste the difference".

He said: "It took me six months to get the recipe right using the most expensive ingredients I could find and you certainly won't find this wrapped in plastic down at Tesco."

According to the company's website, it is said to be perfect for 'tartines, croc monsieur, weekend toast with marmalade, and with anything and everything until every last slice and crumb has been enjoyed.'

It might have taken Tom six months to perfect his recipe, but it would probably take me six minutes to polish off a couple of Shepherd's Loaf sandwiches.

And although I am partial to quality, organic food, I don't think that represents a particularly good return on my £21, or £12 - whatever price you end up paying.

And I hope anyone prepared to spend that kind of money will spare more than a thought for those people who can't afford even a slice of Mother's Pride.
