What did the Romans ever do for us?

Two things strike me about the amphitheatre in Saintes. The first is that stadium design hasn't progressed much in 2000 years and secondly people were brought here to die for the crowds entertainment, and they lapped it up. Of course when you explain this to two small boys their immediate reaction is to get tooled up with sticks and hammer Dad..... much to the amusement of the teenage French schoolkids on a field trip.
