La vida de Annie

Bringing up baby

This will make Enya, currently holidaying in Spain, a little homesick I think. A few weeks ago we saw a pair of Moorhens in Sefton Park, who had rather foolishly built their nest on some stones at the base of a fountain in the middle of the lake. As the nest was being washed away every time the wind changed and blew the spray over it, I expected them to give up, but no, the female sat on the pile of leaves and twigs to try to hold it together while the male swam around frantically collecting the washed-away debris and passing it back up to her, leaf by leaf. It was exhausting just to watch all the doomed hard work involved. I don't know if they finally gave up (there is no sign of a nest there now), or if this is another pair, but I'd like to think it is the same couple who relocated to a floating platform in a different part of the lake. The male is once more scurrying around and bringing things back, but this time tasty edible titbits which he tenderly feeds to the little chick visible here. He also gave some to the wife, who in turn passed it on to a second chick cuddled under her wing. Best viewed large if you want to see the chick.
