Rainy interlude [Croatia. Day 13]
We woke to find that it had rained heavily overnight, as forecast, and that there was little prospect of any improvement in the weather during the day. Naturally, this cramped our style somewhat and meant that the sun lotion got a well-deserved rest. It remained dry until evening, though, and we even got a bit of a clearance during a long, leisurely lunch at one of the restaurants we'd taken a bit of a shine to.
A little wander after lunch found us at a quirky café-bar above the harbour where we enjoyed a few beers before heading back for a siesta. We tried out some of the colloquial Croat we'd picked up at another place the previous evening, began inside the pirate-themed place and soon upgraded to a wonderfully jokey spot outside where we sat in what amounted too an oversized barrel, savoured our now-favourite Croatian beer, and generally watched the world go by. We were on a corner where a steep narrow street rising from the harbour met the main road which runs parallel to and above the coast, and the surface we were seated at deliberately followed the slope of the street. Part of the quirkiness included these oddly-shaped drinking glasses with canted bases which really took my fancy and kept the camera busy.
Siesta over, we were treated to a spectacular display of thunder and lightning which forced us to cancel our intended plan of having an evening meal in another favourite restaurant near the harbour. Instead, we ate in our own hotel -- not great. There was a movie on TV which we watched in our apartment over a few post-prandial drinks. All in all, not a bad day at all, despite the weather's efforts to spoil things.
