Cydonia oblonga
my quince tree 'died' after getting fire blight, along with most of our orchard, in 2007. At the time I just chainsawed through the trunk as we the more urgent task of preventing our healthy trees getting ill. The next year a nice little bush grew out of the trunk, so I let it. Quinces are often grafted onto pear/wild pear rootstocks, so I assumed that was what was growing. But this year it flowered beautifully with something that looked very much like quince flowers. Now it is loaded with little 'hairy pears' - I'll have to dig out the book of quince recipes I have hoarded somewhere!
