White faced heron with dinner worm or baby eel
White faced heron are native to New Zealand although similar birds are found throughout Australasia and in New Guinea and various other places in the south Pacific. They feed on small fish and other small vertebrates and invertebrates - and will raid domestic fish ponds! This one was feeding at the Avon River mouth where it feeds into the Estuary Christchurch, a salty marshy area.
