LWD Placement
LWD is the acronym for large woody debris, which is the technical term for logs and root balls found, or in this case, placed in a stream channel. If you Google large woody debris, you'll find lots of technical explanations why it improves fish habitat. It's too complicated for me to try explaining it this late in the day. In the past, a lot of effort (and money) was expended in removing LWD.
The LWD in this blip is part of an NSEA (Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association) project on the north fork of the Nooksack River. You can read about earlier work in the area on page 8 of this newsletter. The heavy lifting was done by Columbia Helicopters, using a Boeing/Kawasaki Vertol 107-11 helicopter.
I was very impressed by the precision piloting and by the efficiency of the operation. It was a fun day -- worth getting up at 4:00 AM for.
