Marble metope from the Parthenon
This is one of the ninety-two marble metope's that would have decorated the outside of the great temple on the Acropolis in Athens, Ancient Greece. The metopes all depict mythical battles, in this case between a Centaur (above) and a human Lapith (below), one of the tribes of Greece.
This is just one of the famous Elgin Marbles that are controversially held at the British Museum in London. It is a fabulous display but there are strong arguments for returning the collection to Greece.
