Lyttelton Road Tunnel, Canterbury, New Zealand

Today we had a bit of a road trip round Lyttelton, Governors Bay, Diamond Harbour, Little River, Birdlings Flat, Christchurch and home.  The day was cloudy all round and the water looked very cold. I took many photo's and it was differcult to choose but hubby and Daughter E both chose this one of the Lyttelton Road Tunnel.

The tunnel was New Zealand's longest road tunnel in 1962 when construction began and would link the small town of Lyttelton to Christchurch. The tunnel is 1.9 km and used 250kg of explosives to remove 150,000 cubic metres of rock.  It was then lined with 1.5 million glazed white tiles. It was opened on 27th February 1964 by Brigadier Sir Bernard Fergusson, the last British Governor General of New Zealand.  The tunnel replaced a tortuous route over Evans Pass on the Port Hills.

I'm particularly pleased with this as it was taken from the inside of our moving car.
Its different from landscapes and water scenes which seem to feature strongly in my journal.

Have a good week everyone :)
