Coining it in
In Oslo, the price of a half-litre of cooking lager can vary dramatically. 39 kroner, or about £3.90, is the cheapest this Jarvis has managed to hunt down, although rumours persist of a mythical student bar in which it is much cheaper and you don't really have to be a student to go there. The average price would probably be about 55 kroner (£5.50, ?6.75, US$8.75) and anything under 60 is kind of considered cheap. It is also customary to leave the small 1 krone coins on the bar as tips for bar staff - 1 krone is about 10 pence. At first this seems un-Jarvislike, as some bar staff can still be surly after you've tipped them the price of a few pints in UK terms. However, tipping over a long period of regular usage of a bar often leads to a Jarvis getting "friendly prices" - usually a discount of six of seven kroner per drink. So in the long term, it can actually benefit a Jarvis to tip, even though handing over extra money without getting anything extra in return goes against the grain at first.
