Shit (almost) happened
Unit EC 5 was stopped because of a leaking gasket in the gasvalve unit.
In "piloted premix" burnermode we discovered a big leak; gas was flowing out.
So a stop was scheduled for the night and I made this picture for the daily Blip.
Nice one I thought, the technician; lying between and under the gaspipes; being on the phone, wiping the pipe on which "spotcheck"(to detect cracks in weldings) was applied, (multitasking) his head between insulation.
But I decided to use another picture because when we stopped the high pressure feedwaterpump the engineers in the plant heard a terrible noise.
The gasket was blown out of the stuffingbox of the main feedwatervalve..
So because the feedwater is 100 deg C is turns into steam as soon as it comes out..
We already were planning a longer stop for the unit but an idea came up: these valves have a so-called "backseat": when it's open it blocks the stuffing box. So we decided to start the pump, waited till the (electric) valve was open and the leak was almost closed!
We turned the handwheel a bit more to open and we realized us that we saved our company a lot of money....
