Spicebush Swallowtail
This extraordinarily beautiful butterfly is normally found in deciduous woods or woody swamps, where they can be found flying low and fast through shaded areas. They have the most comic caterpillars who live in folded leaf shelters and eat the leaves of the sassafras or spicebush. I would really like to find one to photograph, as they look just like a child's finger puppet. The adults consume a variety of nectars, including those from azalea, Japanese honeysuckle, milkweed, and thistle flowers. Once again, could have done better, but they were very flighty this morning! I think this is a female, so that could account for it, I suppose!
