The Martians have landed!
A trip to Woking this morning to the dentist provided me with plenty of opportunity for a blip. (Nothing serious at the dentist - just a visit to the hygienist and then a filling needed re-doing. However, the right side of my face is still numb.)
Woking is my nearest town and was made famous in H G Wells' story The War of the Worlds when martians landed on Horsell Common. To celebrate the centenary of H G Wells a few years back a martian sculpture was erected in the town - hence the picture of a martian!
ARTILLERYMAN: The Martians! They were inside the hoods of the machines they'd made - massive metal things on legs! Giant machines that walked - they attacked us! They wiped us out!
Woking was also immortalised in Paul Weller/The Jam's song Town called Malice:
Playground kids and creaking swings -
lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will -
but I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice.
