new garden on the block

this afternoon, along my bike ride to the grocery store, i stopped for a bit to check out alpena's very first community garden. in its first season of existence. chatting with the man who made it happen, excitement mounted inside of me. its not often one can have a real conversation with someone about the local food movement in this town.

surprise surprise. he moved to the area a few years ago from none other than lil' old ann arbor. returning to his childhood home and bringing some local foods knowledge with him. after starting the area's only organic veggie farm and csa, he has moved on to this little plot of land not too far from my house.

and successful he has been! all the plots they cleared are being used, and being used well. the neighborhood is getting into growing. how exciting!
