Crewmail
Used to be the cork that kept a lot of seamen afloat. In earlier days, there was nothing else besides extremely expensive telegrams. They were only used by the crew in emergency situations like weddings, baby borns and unexpected baby borns.
Letters posted in foreign ports were in no hurry, it could take weeks or months before they reached their destination. The other way around was even worse. Thousands of letters arrived just after the vessel departed to another part of this world. The letters eternally following but never reached the ship. Now, we have e-mail, telephone, internet and above all; no more terms of one or two years from home. This morning I was trying to catch some fish in the middle of the North Sea when I saw a crewmember calling his wife with his mobile phone. The Norwegian platforms have relay antenna's so mobile phones can be used on this location. But nevertheless; when the Husky came alongside this morning to deliver crewmail from shore, the old time feeling was still the same
