Red tailed bumblebee
I spent some time this afternoon working with a 100mm macro lens in the garden. The light was poor and there was a breeze so it was a challenge. I opted to use the lens handheld as I tried to capture images of the pollinating insects on the late flowers in the herbaceous border.
This red tailed bumblebee was enjoying the nectar on this telekia speciosa. Oddly enough this plant which grows well (too well) in my border and compost heap, grows wild in Bulgaria where I was on holiday last week.
There is not enough depth of field to keep the nearest leg of the bee sharp, but I like the colours. I've desaturated the flower slightly to avoid distracting from the bee.
