a madeleine

I may be just me, but I've noticed a few references recently in the papers to 'a madeleine' - as in Proust's madeleine. In other words, an object or sensation which embodies strong nostalgic feelings for times past, long since held in check.

This place is a madeleine for me. I don't particularly like golf, or golf courses, but I used to come to this place regularly with my grandad when I was young - up until my teens in fact. So, walking though here today I couldn't think of anything but him - he's in his 90's now and can't get about much, but today I saw the man of 25 years ago: in rude health, laughing, recognising everyone who crossed his path...

I must go and see him tomorrow.
