I walked home through the park and there were bagpipers and drummers and people in kilts everywhere. Even in the line up for Shawarma (even if some of them really don't need it). I finally discovered that this is the weekend of the Scottish Games in Maxville - a small town outside Ottawa. Hence, the Scottish influence.
