Not a Purse
Paragliding reserve parachute -- $777. Peace of mind -- priceless.
Two years after my last paragliding flight, I've finally started selling my equipment, much to C's relief. This reserve chute is listed on eBay.
When you list an item on eBay, you have to specify whether it's new or used. I couldn't truthfully say it's new, since I carried it with me on many flights, but thankfully it was never necessary to use it. I did practice throwing it before each inspection and re-packing. In an attempt to simulate an actual worst-case scenario, you do this suspended from the ceiling in your harness. A helper(?) spins you vigorously, and then you throw the chute on command, trying to hit a mark on the floor. In a real emergency, you have to be able to throw the chute clear of your collapsed wing and the suspension lines. Just pulling the handle doesn't work.
I'll always miss flying, but I'll never forget the thrill I felt each time my feet left the ground.
