Day 18: Lost and Found

A mangrove shoot was growing in the middle of the lagoon beside our guesthouse. This gives me hope that the resilience of nature will outlast the destructiveness of humans.

Mangroves are among the most endangered types of forest on earth. But they will grow back if we give them space and time.

Sadly we boarded the boat to Belize City and to go home but not before I found a tarantula hiding under my luggage. Oh, I said, a tarantula. I put a bowl over it, a piece of plastic under it and carried it outside to safety. How much I had learned in two weeks!

The taxi driver who took us to the airport was an amazing person. He grew up on the streets of Jamaica and through the force of his personality and with determination he has made a good life for himself in Belize. He was very proud to be driving his own cab. Once again I was reminded of how ephemeral my own point of view and opinions are.

I was still missing my backpack which had contained my bird book. I asked if there was a lost and found at the airport, the check in person looked at my bag, said just a moment and disappeared. He came back a minute later carrying my backpack! I was reunited with my bird book at last!
