Tombs in Shamakha.
18th/19th Century mausolea of the khans of Shamakha, once a capital city and major trading centre. As we wandered around the old graves, a prayer service was going on at a more modern grave behind us. Hearing the men and boys chanting was quite atmospheric. Yeddi Gumbaz means seven tombs - there are three domed mausolea remaining, and the walls or foundations of the others. According to the guidebook, there's another graveyard some 8 km from here that has seven (out of nine) pointed tomb towers dating from the 1600's. We didn't find them inspite of an elderly man who gave very detailed instructions in Azeri (which none of our party spoke much of) and then invited us in for tea!
