Olav

This is Olav, who's 79 and one of our house sitters for the winter. He was born at the house and planted most of the modern trees and borders in the garden. It was his brother who sold the house to us. We're only the second family to have owned it since it was built in 1860; that same family owned the land here since 1649. Olav is well known in these parts as a tree planter. Currently he's responsible for 22 plantations around the island.

He came over to get the chicken care tutorial this morning. I asked him if he was planning on going anywhere this winter.
"No. No plans. In fact I'm counting on not going anywhere at all. I'm like my mother - I can't see the point of being anywhere but here".
"That sounds like a definition of contentment" I said to him.
"Well yes. I suppose it is" he said.
