Clawed Tree

I was struck today by the massive splits in the bark of this tree. They look almost like some monstrous beast has clawed it ;-)

Its leaves were also rather brown and wilted, while the trees around it all had nice green foliage, so I'm not sure it's a particularly happy tree :-/
