Stella Maris

The Stella Maris ('Star in the Sea') festival at Camogli near Genoa.

Once a year the people of Camogli and neighbouring towns light thousands of tiny candles and place them in the sea, where they are slowly carried out by the waves until the water looks like a sky full of stars. Each one repsresents a soul that has been lost to the sea.

A spectacular sight and atmosphere that really can't be summed up in a photo - I've never seen anything quite like it.
