Market town.

My nearest town - Bingley - is an old market town which was granted it's first Market charter in 1210 by King John. It's second Market Charter was granted by William and Mary in 1693 which was when the Market Hall and Butter Cross (out of view) seen in the foreground was built.

In more recent years this historic structure was hidden away in a park on the outskirts of the town but in 1984 Bingley Civic Trust restored it to the centre of the town.

More recently still the area in the background was cleared for a new market place, with temporary stalls in use on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Traffic in the town has been reduced by a bypass and attempts have been made to make it more pedestrian friendly in the centre. Not sure how well this is going but it is definitely an improvement when crossing the road.

I thought it was interesting to picture the old with the new.
