Digging 19: Grave 8
Apologies again for a technically and aesthetically rubbish photograph. I forgot to take any until clearing-up time today, but I didn't want to disappoint chook ;)
So, this is Grave 8, which lies under Grave 3 (the green algae is growing on the side of the Grave 3 cut). Skeleton 8 can be seen as the shins and feet in the picture, the rest of the bone is "charnel", ie disturbed bones which were dug through to make Grave 8, then thrown back on top of the body when the grave was backfilled. It seems that at least two other burials were disturbed by this grave (there are two skulls there!) and unusually, Grave 8 was widened to allow room for the charnel to be redeposited.
(The skull at the top of the picture is from Skeleton 9, also exposed by grave 3. I'll get to her next week...)
