A careing society?
This lady was trying to sell the Big Issue on the corner of a busy WEst End street. I asked her where she was from and she said Romania. As someone who visited that beautiful country proir to the fall of Chichezcow I am fascinated that these lovely people have chosen to come here and end up either begging or trying to shift the Big Issue which for them their suppliers are actually nasty gangmasters.
She said she had 6 children the youngest had just gone to school. She also said that the money fro the BI was not good and it was hard to feed her family. Is this the caring society we have become? Expecting someone to survive on the pittance they earn from the £1.75 , most of which will no doubt go back to the gangmasters! A couple of pounds isnt out of our way to give and not take the magazine , that way they get to keep that paltry wee amount for themselves.
I know there are also lots of Romanies who were treated badly by the Romanians themselves back in their own country! Always be nice to folks on the way up... you may meet them again ... on the way back down!
Romania is a beautiful country that still hasnt been helped by Europe. All that was done was one lot of baddies were toppled for another. Its sad to see these people having to beg on our streets. The next time you pass her, be generous! Despite all that she still smiled when we tried to speak with neither of us having a common language!
