off to the beach. struck lucky.
this one is where they are trying to preserve the seaturtles.
at the end of a lovely day of swimming and sandcastle building, we found 2 turtle helper people doing a recce of the nests.
they'd already marked when and where the eggs had been laid - the adults come in at night and lay the eggs in a hole under the sand, returning to the beach where they were born 25 yrs previously.
the first hole yielded a pile of rotten eggs and dead babies
the second hole produced 20 live turtles, buried too deep to get out. so we stood and watched as they struggled across the sand to find the sea, aiming for the light shining on the water. (normally they do this at night but it was dusk and these ones didn't have much chance of surviving so the volunteers let them have their moment of freedom). they reached the waves and allowed themselves to be washed away.
4 inches big and all alone in the sea
