nogbad's blips

Deposit 5/-

Some of the apples and pears are being harvested now so the large crates in which they are stored have been moved into the yard. These are boxes with a pallet base and they are stacked in the cold store where apples can happily stay for months. I wandered up to take some photos and found something far more interesting.

On two pallets behind the shed are the smaller cases used for taking apples to market, this photo shows the detail on the side of one. This crate dates back to October 1959 and the purchaser would have paid a deposit of 5/- (five shillings). Some also show the owner's name and my landlord's father is named on some. The orange line across the image is the twine holding the stack in shape.

I've uploaded the set (half a dozen shots) to Flickr.
