Public laundry - washes whites whiter!

The Chorley and District Hygienic Laundry... or more to the point, what is left of it.

The outer and newer building was demolished in 2009, revealing this old stone, which stood over the main entrance into the offices. First up and last to come down. Not sure why this older part of the building still remains to this day, but there it is.

The building was very large and really rather grand when it was built back in 1907 and we can only imagine that it must have contained some sophisticated "state of the art" technology with regard to washing and laundering!

It's so easy to take our sleek and shiny washing machines for granted and we should occasionally give a litte thought to how our grandparents (though most likely grandmothers!) dealt with this mundane but necessary task.

If anyone else can shed more light on the this inner laundry shell I would be pleased to hear it. I am very curious!
