Guernsey - south coast
The coast line of Guernsey is spectacular, especially around the south part of the Island. This is Joanette Bay which has its own special claim to historic importance. The Germans occupied Guernsey in June 1940. After bombing the islands (to test whether British resistance still existed and as a result killing 30 Islanders) they landed and moved into an Occupation which would last through to 1945
But just a few days after the Germans arrived, a British Commando Lieutenant Hubert Nicolle-landed in this quiet southern bay in order to make some kind of assessment of what was happening. It was a very dangerous mission.
I am in the process of reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato-Peel Pie Society" about these days. Wonderful read - highly recommended!
A friend told me to go find La Gran'mere du Chimquiere and then it so happened I stumbled across her by accident. Another lady of 4,500 years' age. People would have looked to her for fertility assistance or to effect a cure. Offerings of money are still placed on her head today - especially by brides or visitors!
