At least the tall one hasn't lost her head! Not sure about her dress sense, though.

I suspect they are work clothes, because she does have a job to do.

She is one of the 32 caryatids in Cheltenham's Montpellier Walk and she's there to hold the roof up.

The first caryatids were erected in Montpellier in the 1840s, modelled on similar statues on the Acropolis in Athens.

More were added in the 1850s and a couple more were put up as recently as the 1970s on an extension to a bank.

This is one of Cheltenham's most exclusive shopping areas and, although I wouldn't go as far as some in claiming it to be the nicest shopping street in the country, it's certainly pleasant when the golden Cotswold stone is brought to life by the early morning sun.
