KNITTED STOCKINGS
Four pairs of stockings knitted in the late 19th century . The earliest pair was made in 1874 and are personalised with the initials A.L.
These examples were purchased this year for the NATIONAL TEXTILE COLLECTION as there are very few examples of stockings available. In most parts of rural Wales in the 18th and 19th centuaries the domestic stocking industry was a vital element of the economy.
My great great grandmother was a stocking knitter as recorded in the 1871 census.
"Can you tell me anything about these stockings? Do you know anything about the Knitting Industry, such as the small mills in Cwm Morgan that produced stockings."
I spent and enjoyable morning at the National Wool Museum at Drefach Felindre.
Hence my enthusiasm!!!
