The Long Stone

This is the Long Stone on Thorngrafton Common overlooking Vindolanda and the Stanegate.

The Long Stone was erected in the 19th Century to commemorate 9 miners who died in an accident in a nearby mine.

Vindolanda is an early Roman Fort that is now an on-going archaeological dig - it was here that they discovered the Vindolanda Tablets - 'postcards' written in roman times and preserved in the clay. They estimate that it will take another 200 years to complete the excavations.

The Stanegate is a Roman road that connected Corbridge with Carlisle via Vindolanda. It can be seen heading away from the top right corner of the fort, straight to the horizon.

The Whinsill can seen at the far right of the photo - this is where the Wall runs.

(This makes more sense when viewed large.)
