Festival of Sail
The Tall Ships came to San Diego on Thursday, docked along the Embarcadero and for the Labor Day week-end there has been mock sea battles with cannon fire, rides on sail powered boats and ships and the usual food and crafts stalls that always accompany any event.
The ship on the left is the Californian (USA) which is a square topsail schooner.
The ship on the right is Amazing Grace (USA) it is supposed to be topsail schooner, but in this shot she looks like a brigantine (to me).
They also tell me she is a replica of a revenue cutter! I think both are still correct.
So many of the terms for specific ship types can morph into another classification that you have to be an expert to know the nuances, which I am not. Try to "decode" the classifications here.
There were several ships that participated and the Star of India, which holds the distinctive title of the oldest active ship in the world was in the sailing parade on Thursday, but was solidly moored when we arrived to blip. SIGH! THAT would have been a wonderful blip because barques/barquentines have so many sails and look very impressive!
