bees whiskers
I have spent the last 45 minutes deciding between this image and another bee picture I took this afternoon.
I am posting this one because it shows a bee's moustache clearly. He's a male Red Tailed bee, dusty with pollen but the yellow on his face is hair. Someone asked me how you know if a bee is male. The antennae in males are longer-they have an extra segment, but life is too short to count antenna segments ,so it is easier to spot the moustaches. Some bumblebee males have handsome yellow or ginger moustaches. In fact, as far as I know, no female bumblebees have pale moustaches, so if you see a bumblebee with a yellow face, odds are it's a male. There are still decent numbers of bees around if you fancy a bit of bee spotting-and many are the yellow moustached varieties.
But-and there is always a but-not all male bumblebees have yellow whiskers. Some are dark. Life is never that simple, is it? back to counting antenna segments. One, two....
