Capital of Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel is the biggest of the Azores islands. It is not sure when the Azores were found but it is believed that the Portuguese Captain Diogo de Silves was responsible for this. This happened in 1427. The first Portuguese settlers came in 1444 and made Vila Franco do Campo the capital of Sao Miguel.
It didn't last long because in 1522 the town was destroyed completely by a powerful earthquake. After this tragedy, Ponta Delgada was appointed as capital of Sao Miguel. The needle rock in the front on this picture is called Baixa dos Cracas and you can see the small and ex-capital Vila Franco do Campo in the background. Was this conspicious rock formed by the earthquake in 1522? No one knows I guess.
