Thistle Down

By Ethel

Battleground

T'was a battle-ground,
Where white-men and Indians fought.
Blood had once been scattered there,
And we...now living have forgot.

We for-got the mountains,
That were running down.
Forgot the peace-council,
That made us a clown.

Forgot the treaties,
And our mighty stand.
Forgot our pact and promises,
Of not taking the land.

Forgot the buffaloes,
And of taking their hides.
Of the times...and times again,
That tongues had lied.

T'was a battle ground,
That brought us grief.
Militia-men and caravans,
Against warriors and chief.

Family; This is a 'family-fort' next to a log cabin built in 1866 for protection from Indian attacks.
